Westland Lynx SH-14D c/n G-17-28 with registration 279 of the Dutch Helicopter Command 860 naval squadron undergoing maintenance at Naval Air Station De Kooy in The Netherlands (EHKD) on 21 September 2011. The text "Koninklijke Marine" on the tail is Dutch for "Royal Navy".The aircraft entered service with the former Dutch Naval Air Service (in Dutch: Marineluchtvaartdienst or MLD) on 8 January 1981 as a Mk.81 (SH-14C). It was converted to the SH-14D standard in May 1995. The Dutch Naval Air Service was disbanded in July 2008 at a time when only helicopters served with the MLD. All Dutch air force and navy helicopters are now part of the Dutch Defence Helicopter Command (DHC).
