Model Year: 1942

Construction Number: 4545

The Carolinas Aviation Museums Piedmont DC-3 was built for the US Army Air Force in 1942 as a C-47 cargo airplane.  It served exclusively in the United States during WWII. After the war it served in a number of civilian roles in both the US and Canada. During this period it underwent several upgrades including the replacement of the original cargo door with the air-stair.

Piedmont acquired the aircraft in 1986-1987, and never flew this aircraft in airline service. After its up fit in Piedmont colors, Piedmont, and then USAir flew this aircraft as a “flying museum” and as a corporate relations aircraft until 1996. The aircraft was then purchased from USAir by the Carolinas Aviation Museum with the assistance of many sponsors, including many ex-Piedmont Airlines employees.
