Airmen inspecting the Holt flareholder on a 9 ETFS Tiger Moth II, Ansty, winter 1939/40. Its spring loaded pylon was mounted below the front interplane strut. As landing lights as such were not carried by Tiger Moths, the pilot could fire the Holt flare, similar in appearance to large Roman Candle-like firework, to illuminate the ground around him.
