This particular Mercury Space Capsule was flown by Alan B Shepard Jnr on his 15 minute sub orbital flight of the Earth, the first by an American. John Glenn would have the honour of being the first American to orbit the Earth. All the Mercury capsules are on display in museums, including Gus Grissoms Mercury Space Capsule after it was recovered from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

Recently I read that the first stage of the Saturn V that launched Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins on their historic mission to land on the Moon has been located at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Plans to recover this historic piece of machinery are ongoing.

The Mercury space capsules were manufactured by McDonnell Aerospace Corp.
