Seen taxiing to depart RIAT 2010, this Harrier, ZD437, was one of three Harrier GR.9As of 41 (R) Squadron to have been marked up with codes from 41 Squadron Spitfires which took part in the Battle of Britain as part of the Battle of Britain's 70th and the Squadron's 95th anniversaries in 2010 and 2011 respectively. ZD437 wears the codes EB-J of Spitfire Mk.Ia X4559 piloted by Squadron Leader George 'Ben' Bennions DFC.
Bennions scored 12 kills, 5 probables and 5 damaged before a shell exploded in his cockpit, blinding him in the left eye and severely injuring his right arm and leg. Having managed to bail out and been found in a field near Hatfield, he was admitted to the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinsted and to the care of Archibald McIndoe, becoming one of the founding members of the Guinea Pig Club, formed of those who had undergone experimental reconstructive surgery at the hands of McIndoe.
