Samuel Cody, one of the great aviation pioneers. However, he knew nothing of aerodynamics, and cared less. Never had there been a more remarkable instance of a man attaining considerable success by pure trial and error, whilst remaining in profound ignorance of what he was doing. He was killed on 7th August 1913 when his new aeroplane collapsed around him.
