The US Air Force’s first Boeing C-17 strategic transport to be permanently based outside the continental USA arrived at Hickham AFB, Hawaii last week, as air force planners confirmed their intention to cease acquiring the type after a fiscal year 2007 order for a final 12 aircraft. The US Pacific Command will be able to use eight C-17s from Hickham by year end, the air force says. The aircraft will operate alongside types including Air National Guard Boeing F-15Bs already at the facility. Boeing is continuing efforts to secure Congressional support to obtain extra C-17 orders beyond the current USAF commitment for 180 aircraft.
