USAF KC-10s for upgrade

The US Air Force is soliciting proposals to upgrade its 59 McDonnell Douglas KC-10 tanker/transports. Up to six concept refinement study contracts worth around $1 million each are to be awarded in June.

The USAF wants to equip the KC-10 with integrated flightdeck displays, enhanced flight management system, GPS navigation, satellite communication, colour weather radar, electronic charts and manuals, and flight data and flightdeck voice recorders.

Other requirements include electronics to capture receiver identification for transmission to ground commanders; compatibility with future wideband networks; formation flight and threat situational awareness; defensive systems; night-vision lighting; and fuel-tank fire/explosion protection.
