Luxembourgish all-freight operator Cargolux Airlines has selected Rolls-Royce RB211 engines to power its two newly-ordered Boeing 747-400Fs.

The additional aircraft will take Cargolux to a total of 16 Boeing 747s, of which 11 will be Rolls-Royce powered. Cargolux president and chief executive Ulrich Ogiermann says: “The Rolls-Royce RB211 engines provide us with optimum versatility and economics for our 747-400 freighters while minimising the environmental impact of our worldwide operation.”

The freight carrier is taking the Boeing 747-400Fs, due for delivery in 2007 and 2008, as interim capacity ahead of introducing the new Boeing 747-8F. Powerplants for both -400F aircraft will be covered by Rolls-Royce’s TotalCare support package. The companies have added a five-year extension to their existing deal.
