Video: Canadian low cost carrier WestJet explains just how required navigation performance works

It is one of the most important developments in air transport operations today but the concept of required navigation performance (RNP) and just how it generates its benefits is not so easy to understand.

RNP operations require specially equipped flight-management systems in the cockpit and satellite navigation, enabling pilots to approach and depart airfields without traditional ground-based navigation aids.

States and operators are beginning implementation of RNP as part of a worldwide International Civil Aviation Organization effort to implement communication, navigation, and surveillance (CNS) and air traffic management concepts.

The video below, produced by Canadian low-cost carrier WestJet with help from its partners like Boeing, Smiths Aerospace and Naverus uses a combination of real-life footage and animation to explain nicely how it all works.
