Bell 210 deal nears

The US Department of State has approved Bell Helicopter’s proposed sale of 18 Model 210 light utility helicopters to the Indonesian army, in what could become the first military sale of the remanufactured civil-certificated UH-1H.

Indonesia’s army first expressed interest in the 210 last year, but could not fully evaluate the type because Bell was unable to provide technical information (Flight International, 12-18 April 2005). Sources say the manufacturer is now preparing to provide technical data and will host a demonstration for the service following Washington’s approval last month.

The army is understood to be seeking funds in Indonesia’s 2007 budget to cover the roughly $70 million purchase, with sources suggesting its request will be approved within the next few months. Contract signature is expected early next year, with deliveries from late 2007 or early 2008.

Moscow is trying to convince Jakarta to instead accept a barter deal for additional Russian helicopters, including Mil Mi-17s.
