The nascent Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association (AFRA) last week announced its board and charter goals and revealed Sweden’s Volvo Aero as its 11th member at its launch event at Chateauroux Air Center in France. AFRA was set up in April to develop procedures for aircraft recycling.

The AFRA board includes Air Salvage International, Boeing, Evergreen Air Center, Europe Aviation, Huron Valley Fritz West and Milled Carbon. Adherent Technologies, Bartin Recycling Group, Volvo Aero, and UK academic network Wingnet are members, but are not represented on the board.

“AFRA is in discussions with 20 other companies to join,” says Boeing aircraft and composite recycling project manager Bill Carberry.

Boeing is to use AFRA members Milled Carbon and Adherent Technologies to recover the resin-impregnated carbonfibre from production waste on its 777 and 787 airliner programmes, and eventually from scrapped aircraft.
