Boeing and Emirates are believed to be close to signing a contract for as many as 10 747-8F freighters, less than two months after the Dubai-based carrier converted its orders for the cargo variant of the Airbus A380 to more passenger versions. Although details remain scarce, Emirates is thought to be discussing firm orders for an initial batch of five aircraft, with follow-on options for a further five. At current list prices this values the potential deal at more than $2 billion assuming the options are eventually exercised.
The additional orders, if confirmed, will take 747-8F/Intercontinental orders, options and purchase rights to around 45 aircraft. To date the manufacturer has firm orders for 18 freighters and one for the 747-8 Intercontinental. Launch customer Cargolux also holds purchase rights on a further 10 -8Fs, while Nippon Cargo holds options on six -8Fs. Emirates switched its A380-800F order to the passenger variant in May following delays to finalisation of the design. The delay means launch customer FedEx Express is not expected to take delivery until early 2009, compared with its original date of August 2008. First delivery of the 747-8F to Cargolux is scheduled for September 2009.
