The newly-modernised Lockheed Martin C-5M Super Galaxy has completed its dynamic taxi testing at Edwards AFB in California.

The 20-year life upgrade programme includes a new structural design of the new engine pylon, which these tests including taxining across a series of ramps on the dry bed of Lake Rogers. The main focus of this section of testing was the C-5M’s structure movement when travelling over rough surfaces with the new engines and pylon.  This portion of the robust test programme for this unique strategic airlift capability demonstrates the structural integrity of more than 70 enhancements to the aircraft, says Lockheed Martin.

George Shultz, vice president, Lockheed Martin C-5 modernisation programme says: “Our job is to ensure that we provide the warfighter with a modernised aircraft that withstands the rigours of combat.  At the same time, this aircraft provides enhanced reliability and will result in significant life cycle cost savings for the US Air Force.”

Each C-5M goes through the Avionics Modernisation Programme (AMP) along with the Reliability Enhancement and Re-Engining Programme (RERP).
