Boeing and General Electric expect to meet noise reduction targets for the 747-8’s GEnx-2B engine after completing a three-week ground test on a GE90-115B powerplant.
“The test results, combined with other noise-reduction technology applied to the 747-8, show projected reduction in noise levels of the order of 10dB relative to the 747-400,” say the two companies.
“This noise reduction puts the 747-8 10dB below ICAO Chapter 4 standards,” add Boeing and GE.
The GEnx-2B features a one-piece, sound-absorbent acoustic inlet liner, which extends around 30cm (12in) into the forward fan case.
The engine nacelle also incorporates chevrons on both the hot-core-exhaust and fan-bypass nozzles.
