Queensland-based engine manufacturer Revetec has received A$1 million ($780,000) in Australian government funding to commercialise a new fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engine for sport and recreational aircraft. The funding is awarded through the government's Commercial Ready and Commercialising Emerging Technologies programme.

Two versions of the 2.4 litre water-cooled X4 engine will be developed - one to run on unleaded aviation fuel and the second to use jet fuel. The X4 will have an output of 110hp (80kW) and will be 25% more efficient than conventional internal combustion engines, says Revetec. The engine is designed to achieve improved power and torque output with less fuel consumption and emissions, it adds.

The unleaded aviation gas version is expected to be completed around August, with flight tests planned for this year, says the company.
