FARNBOROUGH 2008: Portal exercised

Boeing and Qinetiq staged a networked training exercise on the sidelines of the Farnborough air show this week, during which the US partner announced plans to establish a similar capability in India and South Korea.

Since opening the jointly-funded decision support battlelab – dubbed ‘The Portal’ - at Farnborough last July, Boeing and Qinetiq have hosted more than 130 training events, and increased their initial staffing levels at the site by 30%, says facility manager Shane Arnott of Boeing.

During the live demonstration at the show, the facility’s systems were networked with other Qinetiq sites in the UK and at several Boeing sites in the USA, including Long Beach, Philadelphia, Seattle and St Louis. This enabled simulated operations involving surveillance aircraft, manned fighters and attack helicopters flown using distributed training devices.
