Rolls-Royce has secured certification of the Trent 1000 powerplant for the Boeing 787, the first engine to be validated concurrently by European and US regulators.

The European Aviation Safety Agency has today formally awarded the airworthiness certificate to the manufacturer, delivering the approval simultaneously with a type certificate from the US FAA.

It clears the Trent 1000 engine for use on the 787 ahead of the twin-jet’s first flight later this year. Rolls-Royce has obtained orders for more than 500 Trent 1000s from 15 carriers and five lessors.

The Trent 1000 will have seven variants – designated A, C, D, E, G, H and Z – covering a thrust range of 227-333kN (51,000-75,000lb).

Nine engines have been used for ground tests and 10 more will become part of the flight-test programme on four 787 aircraft. Production deliveries will start early in 2008.
