Aerial refuelling tankers could be unmanned

The Israeli air force will soon begin a feasibility study of refuelling unmanned air vehicles via other UAVs, to meet their particular operating requirements.

The study, based on large UAVs such as the Israel Aerospace Industries Heron TP and others under development, looks to establish the capability of a dedicated unmanned tanker to refuel other UAVs in combat areas.

Israeli UAV makers IAI and Elbit systems will be closely involved. IAI has vast experience in aerial refuelling systems and both companies are manufacturing big UAV that can be used as tankers.
