Toyota may invest in Mitsubishi Regional Jet

Japanese car manufacturer Toyota is considering investing in Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' proposed 70- to 90-seat regional jet programme.

Toyota confirms that it is assessing a proposal that may see it investing in the Mitsubishi Regional Jet programme. MHI will only say that "we are asking for co-operation of other companies, but at this point we cannot disclose the names".

MHI began offering its proposed 70- to 90-seat MRJ to potential customers in October with a view to formally launching the programme early this year.

The company has said it hopes other companies, both local and foreign, may invest in the programme by taking minority stakes.

All Nippon Airways is seen as the most likely potential launch customer. Japan Airlines has also been evaluating the aircraft which, if developed, will be powered by Pratt & Whitney's GTF geared turbofan.
