Arrest after man gains access to Heathrow runway

Police have apprehended a man who managed to gain access to the northern runway at London Heathrow Airport today.

The man, who was carrying a bag, was arrested at around 14:00.

Heathrow operator BAA says the northern runway, 09L/27R, has been closed until further notice. Operations are continuing on the southern runway but there are delays.

Police are examining a bag recovered from the scene. It is unclear how the man reached the runway but reports suggest he may have climbed Heathrow’s perimeter fence.

There are no immediate further details of the incident which comes amid tightened security ahead of BAA’s scheduled opening of Terminal 5 tomorrow.
