Embraer launches two new business jets

Embraer’s board has approved the launch of two new business jets. The Brazilian manufacturer says development of the MLJ medium-light jet and MSJ mid-size jet will cost $750 million, supported by risk-sharing partners.

The MSJ is scheduled to enter service in the second half of 2012, and the smaller MLJ a year later. The two aircraft will be largely common, with different fuselage lengths but the same stand-up cabin cross-section. Avionics and engines will be common. Suppliers have not been announced.

The all-new MLJ and MSJ will fill the gap in Embraer's business jet line-up between the Phenom 100 very-light jet and Phenom 300 light jet and its super mid-size Legacy 600 and large Lineage 1000.

The Phenom 100 is in flight testing and will enter service later this year. The larger Phenom 300 will fly by mid-year and enter service in the second half of 2009.

The MSJ will carry eight passengers 2,800nm (5,200km) at Mach 0.80. The MLJ will carry four passengers 2,300nm at its long-range cruise speed.
