Boeing has joined the wing assembly and fuselage of the first P-8A Poseidon long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft for the US Navy.

The next major assembly milestone for the military derivative of the 737-800 will be engine installation this summer delivery of the first test aircraft is due in 2009.

The navy is to buy 108 P-8As to replace its P-3Cs, with initial operational capability set for 2013.
