Indian start-up carrier Star Aviation has confirmed up an order for up to 10 Embraer 170 regional jets.

The Brazilian aircraft maker says in a statement that it has signed a contract for the sale of the aircraft with Dubai-based ETA Star Group, which is working to set up the new airline in India. Star Aviation will be based in the southern city of Chennai.

Embraer says the deal covers seven firm orders and three options and deliveries are due to begin in 2009, ahead of the carrier’s planned launch.

Flightglobal.com's sister premium news site Air Transport Intelligence news first reported on the order last week, after the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation announced that Star Aviation had received in-principle approval to import E-170s into India.

Embraer says the carrier’s aircraft will seat 76 passengers in a single-class layout and there will be individual video monitors in each seat.
