The race to develop sustainable biofuel stepped up another gear with UOP, a Honeywell company, and Honeywell Aerospace joining forces with Airbus, JetBlue Airways and International Aero Engines to research second-generation biofuels for commercial aviation.
The company said the project would focus on developing, testing and evaluating the challenges for obtaining approval for aviation fuels produced from second-generation feedstocks such as algae and vegetation, which can be produced without competing with food or water resources.
Honeywell has already made progress in the field of green aviation fuels through its UOP refining technology, which has developed systems to convert natural oils and greases into military jet fuel as part of a US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency project.
