Southwest Airlines signed a multi-year agreement to use an engine wash system offered by Pratt & Whitney Global Service Partners.

Using the system, the CFM International CFM56-7B engine operator will eliminate 135 million lb (about 61,000 tonnes) of CO2 emissions each year and save more than $20 million annually at current fuel prices, Pratt & Whitney says in a statement.

Southwest conducts regular washes at airports in Orlando and Oakland, where Pratt & Whitney has established new service centers.

The washing process uses a closed-loop system with atomized water to wash aircraft engines, avoiding potential contaminant runoff.
