Garuda Indonesia has signed a co-operation agreement with Star Alliance carrier Turkish Airlines (THY).

The Indonesian carrier’s top spokesman in Jakarta says Garuda president, Emirsyah Satar, signed the agreement a few days ago with his counterpart at THY and it means as early as next month the Turkish carrier will start placing its code on Garuda’s passenger flights linking Singapore and Bangkok to Jakarta.

THY currently has no flights to Jakarta but the spokesman says it operates from Istanbul to Singapore and Bangkok so the codeshare to and from Jakarta will help provide feed.

A statement from Garuda also says the two airlines will also co-operate in aircraft maintenance and overhaul.

But a THY spokeswoman in Istanbul says “nothing specific has been agreed to” in this regard.

THY and Garuda each have their own maintenance, repair and overhaul companies that do work for third-party customers.

Garuda is part of no formal airline alliance but THY became a Star Alliance member on 1 April and a few days ago Garuda signed a co-operation agreement with another Star Alliance member, Singapore Airlines.
