Germanwings to ground four aircraft this winter

Budget carrier Germanwings is to ground four of its 29-strong fleet of Airbus A319s this winter in response to surging fuel prices.

A spokesman for the carrier says the aircraft will be grounded from November this winter.

He notes in the past the carrier has used excess capacity from its summer leisure routes to operate on some new more business-orientated routes during the winter. “We will not do that this winter because of the cost of fuel,” he says.

Air France-KLM also said on 6 July it would not increase its winter capacity as much as originally envisaged. The carriers join a string of operators to trim capacity plans this winter.
