China Airlines (CAL) chairman Ringo Chao has resigned, saying he has completed what he set out to do in the job.
Chao sent a letter to employees of Taiwan’s largest airline yesterday announcing his resignation. The carrier says recently appointed president Sun Huang-hsiang will be acting president until a new chairman is named by the board, which could come later this week.
Chao only became chairman of government-controlled CAL in October, replacing Philip Wei who resigned not long after a Boeing 737-800 was destroyed in a fire after landing at an airport in Japan. Chao was president at the time and he remained as both president and chairman until last month, when the carrier named Sun as president.
In his letter to employees yesterday, Chao said he had achieved what he set out to accomplish in the job, including helping improve safety and overseeing the start of regular non-stop flights between Taiwan and China, which began on 4 July.
Chao’s resignation follows a recent change in government in Taiwan.
