The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has announced it is formally investigating a near mid-air collision involving a Boeing 737 and 767 at New York Kennedy airport.

The agency says, on 5 July at 20:36 local time, a Cayman Airways 737-300 that was executing a missed approach from runway 22L when it conflicted with a 767-300 operated by Chilean carrier LAN that was taking off from runway 13R.

The NTSB says: “Tower controllers intervened to attempt to resolve the conflict, assigning both aircraft diverging headings.  The closest proximity of the two aircraft has not yet been determined.  At the time of the incident, the weather was visual meteorological conditions with 6 miles [10km] visibility in haze. There were no reported injuries or damage to the aircraft.”

The agency says it will issue a preliminary report of the incident later this week.
