100 Greatest moment: Apollo 11 Moon landing

GREATEST MOMENT

WINNER APOLLO 11 MOON LANDING

Thirty-nine years ago, news came through of what remains arguably mankind's greatest scientific endeavour. Less than a decade after President Kennedy promised to put a man on the Moon, Apollo 11 touched down on the lunar surface and Neil Armstrong took his famous one small step for man and giant leap for mankind. NASA's David Mould paid credit not just to the Apollo 11 crew but to the thousands of staff who worked on the Apollo programme, and looked forward to a next century during which man would take the next big step in space exploration and walk on Mars.
