VIDEO: Surveillance camera captures Spanair MD-82 crash

Video images have emerged of the final moments of the Spanair Boeing MD-82 which crashed while attempting to take off from Madrid Barajas Airport.

The video, which has been obtained by Spanish paper El Pais, shows the aircraft momentarily airborne before it careers across rough terrain to the right of runway 36L, churning up dust. It then disappears from view into a ravine, where its fuel ignites.

El Pais says that the video has been sourced from a surveillance camera installed at Barajas by Spanish airports operator AENA.

The crash occurred as the MD-82 was making a second attempt at departure to Las Palmas on 20 August.

Spanish investigators have discovered evidence that the aircraft's flaps had not been deployed before the take-off roll, and that a configuration warning failed to sound in the cockpit to alert the pilots.
