All 66 occupants of an Ecuadorian Fokker F28 have escaped uninjured after the aircraft overran the runway at Quito, apparently during departure on a domestic service.

The Icaro Air twin-jet has been identified by the airport's operator as being registered HC-CDT.

It careered down a slope and came to rest near residential buildings. The extent of damage to the aircraft is unclear, but there is evidence the jet may have struck a wall.

Flight's ACAS database identifies the Rolls-Royce Spey-powered aircraft as a 23-year old example owned by Capital Airline Leasing.

It had been operating flight X8504, a scheduled service to Coca, when the accident occurred at 11:18 yesterday.

Quito International Airport was shut for one hour while emergency services attended the scene, says the airport's operator in a statement.

"So far the cause of the accident is unknown," it adds.

There were 62 passengers and four crew members on board the aircraft but none of them was injured.
