Sweden: the game changers

Sweden’s scaling down of its military has had a huge impact on the nation’s aerospace industry, forcing it to develop new capabilities, extend existing ones, and scout for business the world over. The challenge has been taken up. Saab’s fighter jet, the Gripen JAS39, is in the frame for several export orders, and recently completed international training deployments.

Saab and Volvo Aero have embraced complex composite manufacturing, gaining access to new programmes. CTT has established itself as a supplier of on-board systems to Airbus and Boeing. Swedish Space has expanded into areas both glamorous (spaceports) and low-key (maritime surveillance).
