Injuries are being reported after a Northwest Airlines Boeing 747-400 carrying more than 400 passengers encountered severe turbulence near Tokyo while operating a flight from Manila today.
Reports from Japan say between 30 and 40 passengers suffered injuries in the midday incident, which occurred as the aircraft was in a holding pattern before preparing to touch down at Tokyo's Narita Airport on its flight from Manila.
Television pictures showed ambulances taking injured passengers to hospital after the 747-400 touched down at Narita airport. The reports say 408 passengers and 14 crew were on the aircraft and most of the injuries were considered minor.
