The government of Canada has created its Green Aviation Research and Development Network (GARDN) that is designed to foster the development of technologies to reduce aircraft noise and emissions in the vicinity of airports.

Established by the Canadian Aviation Environmental Working Group and based in Ottawa, GARDN brings together government, academic and industrial partners for the development of aviation environmental technologies.

"This will lower the production of greenhouse gases by the aviation sector and reduce the carbon footprint of Canadian aviation," says the Canadian government.

GARDN is one of four Business-Led Network of Centres of Excellence. Government funding for the next four years for the centres is C$39 million ($30.7 million). The other networks focus on energy production, drug development and nanotechnology.
