Collapse of DHL deal quickens exit of UPS DC-8s

Stalled talks and the likely dissolution of an agreement with DHL is forcing UPS to look at shedding its 44 DC-8s before the original 2013 exit date.

During a speech at the MRO Americas today UPS President Bob Lekites said UPS has 44 of the aircraft on its certificate, but only operates four.

Lekites says UPS was saving the remaing DC8s for potential DHL flying.

While DHL is signaling the deal is off, Likites says UPS has not made a formal announcement.

"We would have liked to do business with them but it looks like they are going out on their own," he says.

As a result, Likites says UPS is "likely to do something sooner" with the aircraft than 2013.
