Fresh from winning an order with Etihad Airways to power its Airbus A380s, Engine Alliance secured another today from Reunion-based Air Austral.
The order for the GP7200 engine to power two A380s elevates Engine Alliance's share of the market to 50%. Roll-Royce Trent 900s also power the widebody aircraft.
Air Austral president Gérard Ethève says the carrier is creating a subsidiary to operate the aircraft in a high-density, 840-seat configuration. He believes the carrier "will be a pioneer in this type of operation", as Air Austral's passenger counts are estimated to reach 1.2 million in 2012.
