Royal Jordanian Airlines' chief executive, Samer Majali, has resigned from his post at the head of the carrier and will step down on 1 August.

Majali has led the airline for eight years and, during his tenure, oversaw Royal Jordanian's privatisation and its integration into the Oneworld alliance.

He has not given a reason for his decision, although the carrier says the board accepted Majali's resignation "upon his request" yesterday.

Royal Jordanian chairman Nasser Lozi says Majali's "huge and ongoing" efforts have allowed the carrier to "hold an eminent position" in the airline industry.

Majali, who has also just ended his one-year term as chairman of IATA's board of governors, has not detailed his future plans.

He has been with Royal Jordanian since 1979 and worked in areas such as flight operations, informaiton technology and passenger services.
