Iraq's ministry of transport has put up for sale six Iraqi Airways aircraft which have been in long-term storage in the Jordanian capital Amman.

In a notification the ministry says it is selling four Boeing 727s and two 707s grounded at Queen Alia International Airport.

The aircraft were placed there as part of the effort to evacuate the Iraqi Airways fleet during the Gulf conflict in the early 1990s.

Other aircraft were relocated to Tunisia. There had been plans to restore the aircraft to flying condition, possibly for reintroduction to Iraqi Airways service, but these have never materialised.

Baghdad-based Iraqi Airways, which has been leasing various aircraft types to resume operations, has since opted to acquire new Boeing 737s and 787s via an Iraqi Government agreement. The Government has also agreed to take Bombardier CRJ900s.

Iraq's transport ministry has set a 16 July deadline for submissions of interest in the aircraft stored in Jordan.
