IAI flies Heron UAV for Brazil's federal police

Israel Aerospace Industries has demonstrated the capabilities of its Heron unmanned air vehicle for Brazil's federal police, which is eyeing the type for border security missions and other tasks, such as tackling smugglers and drug traffickers, and protecting natural resources.

Conducted in late July, the demonstration was staged under challenging and unpredictable weather conditions in Brazil's southern Parana state. "The Heron was the first UAV system in the world to fly in this region," says IAI, which adds that it performed "flawlessly" and met all customer requests.

The medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV was also easily integrated into the demonstration airspace, in full co-ordination with local air traffic control authorities, the company says.

Brazil's federal police established a high-level team including pilots, engineers and other professionals to investigate the capabilities of international UAV manufacturers about two years ago, with their work to support the selection of a system to meet national requirements.

Following a series of tests, the team decided that IAI's Heron was the best for its requirements, as it can relay data and intelligence in real time - including by using satellite communications - carry a number of sensors simultaneously, and take off and land automatically.

Meanwhile, a joint venture between IAI and Brazil's Synergy Group is close to announcing several new programmes. Established last March, EAE is expected to offer UAVs, radars and navigation equipment, border and coastal-defence systems, aircraft conversions and upgrades. It is also believed to be interested in regional aircraft and military trainers.
