Although those doubters whose wine glasses are eternally half empty have been saying for months that the orders taken this year by major companies at Farnborough would be down on previous events, the world’s major aircraft engine makers have enjoyed a pretty good show.

Orders taken at Farnborough are equivalent to the GDPs of several smaller countries, with a grand total of around $26.2 billion having changed hands.

The total figure is something of an approximation as some of the totals include service arrangements while others don’t and yet more (notably P&W) don’t add in a considerable number of engines where the buyers vetoed disclosure of the amount. 

However, as a guide to how well the industry is doing, it’s a good indicator. As IAE’s Annalie Brown says: “We’ve signed deals worth around $7 billion in a week and that’s more than double what we managed at Le Bourget last year and equivalent to a year’s production, so we’re delighted.”
