All 75 passengers on board an Air Europa Boeing 737 have escaped uninjured after the aircraft overran the runway while landing at Lanzarote Airport in the Canary Islands today.

Flight UX196 had been arriving from Glasgow at about 07:30. Images from the scene show the aircraft came to rest at the coastal end of the single runway, indicating it had been attempting to land on runway 21.

Air Europa has a fleet of more than 30 737-800s. The jet involved is a leased eight-year old example.

A spokeswoman says the 75 passengers, and an unspecified crew complement, were uninjured during the event, and claims the aircraft has not sustained damage. "It will go back to flying today," she says.

Meteorological data from the airport at the time shows visibility and weather conditions were good. Spanish airports operator AENA says Lanzarote Airport is returning to normal operations following the incident.
