Flight's 100 Greatest

100%20greatest%20logo.gif2008 is Flight’s 100 year of publishing.

As part of the celebrations we’re launching a worldwide survey to discover the 100 most popular aviation moments, personalities and aircraft from the past century.

The 100 Greatest is being hosted on AirSpace our community platform and is designed to generate a major discussion around nominations for the following five categories:

Greatest Civil Aircraft
Greatest Military Aircraft
Greatest Engine
Greatest Person
Greatest Moment

The search for the 100 Greatest consists of three phases.

Phase one (i.e. now)

We want your nominations and thoughts on what should be considered, based on personal opinion.

Flight journalists will be sticking their necks out and posting their thoughts.

We’ll be seeking the opinions of industry leaders and well known figures and throwing them into the mix as well.

Phase two (later in the Spring)

At this point we’ll be short listing twenty items in each category. At that point we want people to vote on shortlists to find the winner in each of five categories, and an overall winner.

Phase three (Farnborough Airshow - July)

At the biggest event of the year we’ll be announcing your choices in a grad reveal!

And during all of this we’ll be spotlighting various nominations in a more detailed way both on Flightglobal and in Flight International.

I hope you’ll enjoy participating in Flight’s 100 Greatest as much as we already are!

Flight's 100 Greatest shortlist revealed - vote now and you could win a Sony Camcorder

The nominations for the 100 Greatest in association with Bombardier (greatest civil aircraft, military aircraft, engine, person and moment) have been collated, debated and poured over and finally we've decided on the shortlist for Flight's final 100 Greatest.

You can see the shortlist here on the 100 Greatest page and vote for your choices.

The winners of the categories will be announced at this year's Farnborough Air Show both online and at Flight's 100-year anniversary party. Every voter also is automatically entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a Sony Camcorder.

The judging process for the final shortlist was exhaustive. Flight's senior editors and strategists gathered for days in a darkened room pouring over the nominations and arguing their case for inclusions or exclusions.

Fundamentally, the judges were looking for worthy nominations from the last 100 years but certain criteria were taking into consideration.

The shortlists were to include choices that reflected balance both in terms of geography and chronology.

We wanted all time periods (within the last 100 years) and types of aircraft and nations to be represented (as long as they merited it!) to give the voters a broad spectrum to consider. Go here to study the 100 Greatest shortlists in more detail through Flightglobal's online resources ...

One week left to vote for the 100 Greatest!

Time is running out for you chance to join the likes of NASA's Piers Sellers, Lockheed Martin's Jon Beasley, Formula One's Sir Frank Williams and Virgin Galactic's Will Whitehorn in voting for your 100 Greatest (in association with Bombardier) in celebration of Flight's 100 years of publishing.

You nominated hundreds of different civil and military aircraft, engines, aviation moments and your favourite person in the industry.

Now you have just seven days to vote (voting closes 20th June) for the most popular from the lists that you provided.

Voting is really close with just a few dozen votes seperating potential winners in some of the categories, even after the thousands of votes already submitted. So your votes could still make the difference!

You can vote for your 100 GREATEST in these categories:

Civil aircraft / military aircraft /  engine / person / moment

By voting for your 100 GREATEST you are in the running to win a Sony Camcorder.

The closing date is 20 June and the winning civil and military aircraft, winning engine, winning moment and winning person will be announced at this year's Farnborough air show.
