Week on the Web

Flight international issue - 18-24 March

This week on flightglobal.com you will find images of an Adam Air 737 which slid off the runway at Batam, Indonesia and a user on AirSpace began a discussion thread about how the Indonesian Transport Minister has warned that the airline may soon be forced to cease operations.

View a video on the Flight Blog which demonstrates the capabilities of a Saab Gripen.

Singapore Airlines last week took delivery of its third A380, and flightglobal.com has images of the aircraft coming in to land at Changi airport. For more images of the A380 check out the gallery on AirSpace.

Mary Kirby in her guise a intrepid blogger Runway Girl notes the industry is under pressure to address the fuel burn issue. GE acknowledge that it requires “massive investment” and Airbus suggests that open rotor engines may well be the answer, but more research is needed. Citing the EasyJet ecojet concept, industry types, she says, reckon its design is a “starting point for innovation”.

On the KC-X tanker protest, Kieran Daly blogging on his Unusual Attitude platform says that during his recent trip to Paris to report on EADS results, he found there was some surprise that Boeing are going ahead with it.

After 42 years as a pilot, I've just found out the the L1049's I flew as a new hire in the sixties were Douglas DC 4's. (Pg. 47 Mar 18)
You confirm the average pilot's perception
of press accuracy!

Michael:

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your comment.

I assume you're referring to the Straight and Level piece which lampoons a case of mistaken identity by KLM (they ran an image of a Lockheed Constellation wrongly captioned as a DC-4 in their recent in-flight magazine).

Just in case the concept of S&L missed the mark last week, can I remind readers that it is a light-hearted look at amusing mistakes (not Flight's!), yuckspeak and tales of yore for the colourful world of aviation.

I'd just like to add that we at Flight pride ourselves on the accuracy of our reporting, and although we do occasionally make mistakes, producing correct and reliable information is our primary goal.

Regards,

Michael
