Image of the Week: CF-104 Starfighter

This week’s Image of the Week (featured on page 5 of Flight International), is taken by AirSpace user akoolsbergen (Annette Koolsbergen). Her photo depicts a CF-104 Starfighter.

She writes of her photo:


The two-seat version of the CF-104 Starfighter is placed at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (Mount Hope, Ontario) exterior’s entrance as a guard monument.  The Canadair CF-104 was a modified version of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter supersonic fighter aircraft built in Canada by Canadair under licence. It served with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and later the Canadian Forces until it was replaced by the CF-18 Hornet.

    Anybody knows that this F-104 killed around the world more than 1700 pilots because it was plenty of defaults.
    If this is a record, it was not a good idea to use it like a monument.Otherwise, why not to make an enlargement of the gun who kills Kennedy or the planes who destroyed the twin towers?

    Jaio, your comment smacks of ignorance. Every airplane ever designed has “defaults” (as you put it), as design is usually a matter of managing compromise.
    The F-104 was deadly in inexperienced hands, and did not forgive fools. As well, Canada used them in ways Kelly Johnson never envisioned (low-level nuclear strike, recon, etc). The RCAF retired their airframes with an average of 6000hrs per, compared to the Luftwaffe’s 2000 hours. In Europe, F-104′s had a hard rep due to lower yearly flight hours per pilot, the crowded airspace, and the typical marginal met conditions.
    The CF-104 is an excellent monument, due to its stellar performance, long service history, and un-equaled impact on the senses. Ask any pilot lucky enough to have flown one and they will tell you of the love and thrill of handling such a magnificent machine.
    If it was easy and safe, it would hardly inspire, would it? How many Cessna 172′s are acting as gate guardians around the world?
    Never compare a magical near-mythic machine like an F-14 to a base rifle used by a madman or the pedestrian airliners used by more madmen to commit mass murder. Give your head a shake, sir……
