This is a Deperdussin Monoplane much like the one used by "well-known" French pilot Prevost, who won the Jacques Schneider Maritime Cup in 1913.

The event was a speed contest open to all types of seaplanes. Flight compiled a History of the Schneider Trophy back in 1925.

The race was held eleven times between 1913 and 1931.

piaggiopic.jpgPiaggio doesn't just manufacture those fancy retro-style scooters... it has its head in the clouds too.

Here's an image of a turboprop business aircraft, the aerodynamic Piaggio P180 Avanti II.

In 1986 Flight reported that the aircraft received Italian certification, paving the way for firm orders.

Flight also featured the aircraft at its development stage allowing Flight's cutaway illustrators to get beneath its skin. Here's the aircraft's general arrangement and aircraft profile as it appeared in our archive.

...and the cutaway as it appeared across two pages: first page showing the nose and part of the fuselage of the P180 Avanti and the second page showing the tail.

Concorde made it's last commercial flight five years ago today. Here Concorde G-BOAF is seen taking off from London Heathrow on a ferry flight back to retire at Filton, the aircraft's place of birth.

Flight published a Concorde timeline and I found it in the archives...

To celebrate 100 years of flight Le Mans Sarthe Aero Retro group staged an event at the Hunaudières race course in Le Mans marking Wilbur Wright's first flight in France on 8 August.

Pilot Jef Jacquelin took up the Wright Flyer Type-A replica (F-PMAN) managing two safe hops along the Le Mans runway, in front of a small crowd, said spectator Stephen Wolf.

A century ago the first flight lasted 1 minute 45 seconds, and was long enough for two circuits of the race course, demonstrating to the assembled crowd of onlookers (which included Louis Bleriot) that the Wright brothers had mastered flight. This feat sparked widespread aviation development, which continues to this day.

See more images of the Wright Flyer replicas in our gallery of images including one image of a German Wright Flyer replica hung from the church roof of Abbaye de l'Épau.
