As our correspondent Mary Kirby reports on her Runway Girl blog, Gore Design Completions is showcasing a radical business aircraft interior design concept for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner at #EBACE11 in Geneva.

The design, which features an open floor plan, "is about movement and how it reflects its environment", says Core Design Completions.

"Swirling patterns in the headliners, creative ceiling fans and the furniture construction and placement are meant to fall in line with the air currents on the aircraft creating a fluid environment that wraps itself around the passengers."

Piper has reinvented its first jet-powered offering with the Altaire, a larger, sleeker evolution of the single-engined PiperJet that is now scalable and directed at the business sector as well as the owner/operator market.

While the all-metal proof-of-concept aircraft was anchored on the rectangular Meridian turboprop fuselage with a 122cm (48in) spacer, the Altaire will feature a circular cross-section fuselage that is larger but with the same four-passenger club seat arrangement (below), says Randy Groom, Piper executive vice-president. Many passengers these day have iPods, iPhones, and iPads loaded up with content they want to watch. When travelling, however, while airline IFE systems offer a larger screen, passengers have to contend with the content airlines provide. The solution? Panasonic's connectivity kit that lets passengers connect their device to their seat's IFE PTV, let them watch their content on a larger screen while powering the device. For more info, check out Mary "Runway Girl" Kirby's blog on the Panasonic solution here.

The A350-800's is 10 fuselage frames shorter than the -900 (six forward and four aft) which requires changes to the geometry of section 13/14 (forward), section 16/18 (rear) and the upper shell of section 15 (centre fuselage). This reduces typical two-class seating by just over 10% to 276 passengers. Continue reading...

Jonathan Norris, formerly A350 XWB cabin and cargo programme manager, is Airbus's vice-president cabin design, responsible for new development. He is a chartered engineer with the UK Royal Aeronautical Society.

What sparked your interest in aviation?

As a child I was introduced to aviation through my uncle, who was in the Royal Air Force and who was an avid aircraft model maker. Through making numerous models, devouring aviation books and regular trips to aircraft museums and air shows with my uncle, I was quickly hooked.

As a teenager I worked as a volunteer at the de Havilland Aircraft Museum at Salisbury Hall helping to restore a DH98 Mosquito. This convinced me that I wanted to leave school and take up an apprenticeship, which I did with British Aerospace at Hatfield in 1985.

What does your job entail?

I am responsible for new development activities in cabins on Airbus programmes. My team defines, designs and with our suppliers/partners delivers cabin interiors and lighting, monuments (lavatories, galleys and stowages), cabin electronic systems, passenger and cabin crew seats, in-flight entertainment and connectivity. I am also involved in the steering of research and technology projects such as our Spice project, which brings an innovative approach to galleys.
