Good news for smokers - a proposed German long-haul start-up is looking at the possibility of putting a container in the hold to cater for their needs.
Hapag-Lloyd pilot Tobias Kloss is working on a project to start direct flights from
He is clearly keen on product innovation, and believes there is a need to serve the smoking sector of the market. "Long-haul flights are uncomfortable and inconvenient for smokers," he says.
A revolving door, which includes a mechanism for sucking out the contaminated air, will ensure there is no affect on air quality Kloss says. The anti-smoking lobby will no doubt be pleased that the walls of the container may well be covered with messages warning of the well-known health risks.
Ironically perhaps, Kloss also wants to have a doctor on board at all times, with the aim of both cutting down on diversions and reassuring elderly passengers.
There will also be branded catering, with passengers able to choose from an Internet menu, which will offer more choice and will be cheaper than ordering food on board. If customers want to bring their own food onto the aircraft, they will be free to do so.
Kloss is targeting a May 2007 launch for his airline, which will be known as Hanseflug.
