Cathay Pacific’s strategy of building its network around the hubs of Hong Kong and Beijing is the key to its continuing success, says Tony Tyler, the newly installed chief executive of Cathay Pacific Airways.
He was speaking here at the AsiaExpo centre during the opening Congress session at the Asian Aerospace exhibition.
“Hubbing is what it’s all about,” says Tyler, with Cathay Pacific focused on Hong Kong International Airport and partner Air China developing Beijing International Airport.
With the on-going integration of Dragonair, which Cathay took over last year, Cathay has massively strengthened its network in China with around 20 new routes.
And it is easy to see why Hong Kong is working well. The award-winning airport is just the kind of hub any network carrier wants.
And the rail link to downtown Hong Kong, with its city centre check-in and bag drop facilities, is a real bonus.
The hub power of Hong Kong is growing, says Tyler, with over half of all Cathay’s passengers transferring onto other flights.
Tyler also noted the words of government speakers at the Congress from China and Hong Kong who are committed to adding airport capacity to cope with traffic growth. “It is good to see both governments fully seized on this issue,” he says.
